Strengthening Conservation Efforts Through Collaboration:
A Study Visit to the Special Nature Reserve "Gornje Podunavlje"
In November 2024, representatives of the Jerma Citizens' Association had the opportunity to participate in a study visit to the Special Nature Reserve "Gornje Podunavlje," alongside other organizations from the ecological network "Citizens for Nature." The visit was organized to foster the exchange of knowledge and experiences between civil society organizations engaged in environmental protection, ecological issues, and the management of protected areas, while also enhancing cross-border cooperation. Our hosts, colleagues from the "Podunav" Association in Bački Monoštor, warmly welcomed us, marking the beginning of another successful partnership.
Exploring Local Traditions and Ecological Initiatives
The visit provided a unique chance to connect with local communities and learn about their traditions. Beekeepers, livestock farmers, and fishermen showcased their regional specialties, while we also visited the ethno-house "Mali Bodrog," where we immersed ourselves in an authentic setting and gained insights into traditional architecture and folk costumes. Additionally, we explored local networking models that bring together agricultural producers, hunters, and fishermen to effectively promote both the tourism and ecological values of the region.
Exchanging Knowledge on Nature Conservation
The core purpose of our visit was to explore the Special Nature Reserve "Gornje Podunavlje" and discuss the status of this protected area. Our discussions centered on endangered and protected species, management strategies, community involvement in conservation planning, and the importance of cross-border cooperation with Croatia.
We identified many similarities and potential areas for future collaboration, as well as valuable lessons on effective management practices. One of our key takeaways was the importance of implementing the best strategies observed during our visit into our conservation efforts in Jerma.
A Model for Effective Protected Area Management
A major conclusion from our visit was that "Gornje Podunavlje" stands as an excellent example of well-managed protected areas. With the establishment of a User Council by the managing authority and the implementation of a ranger service, the reserve operates efficiently while providing significant benefits to the local community. Cross-border cooperation with Croatia also plays a crucial role in preserving the natural assets of the region, creating a model that could serve as an inspiration for conservation efforts in Jerma.

Continuing Collaboration and Future Plans
The study visit to "Gornje Podunavlje" provided valuable insights into various models and activities that could be implemented in the Special Nature Reserve Jerma. Our vision is to strengthen cooperation between the "Jerma" and "Podunav" associations and work together to protect the natural heritage of our respective regions. Given that both areas share similar ecological challenges and values, ongoing collaboration will undoubtedly be beneficial for both conservation efforts and sustainable development initiatives.
We look forward to welcoming our friends from "Podunav" to the Special Nature Reserve "Jerma" in the future, continuing our joint efforts to safeguard nature and promote sustainable development.
