Nestled in the southeasternmost part of Serbia, the Special Nature Reserve "Jerma" is a true paradise for nature lovers and outdoor adventure enthusiasts. This enchanting reserve spans the Greben and Vlaška mountain massifs, as well as the greater part of the Jerma River basin, a tributary of the Nišava, making it unique for its geographical and biological diversity.





A Natural Paradise with Rich Flora and Fauna

"Jerma" is not only distinctive in its geomorphological form but also in the plant and animal species that inhabit this area. A total of 901 plant species have been recorded, 77 of which belong to the group of endemics and subendemics. Among them are numerous rare, endangered, and protected plant species, making this region even more valuable.

When it comes to wildlife, "Jerma" is home to 110 bird species, 25 mammal species, 11 species of amphibians and reptiles, 9 species of fish, as well as a vast array of butterflies, beetles, and other invertebrates. This diverse ecosystem is a true haven for ornithologists, biologists, and all those who wish to connect with nature.





Geomorphological and Speleological Attractions

In addition to its rich plant and animal life, the Special Nature Reserve "Jerma" is renowned for its spectacular geomorphological formations and speleological phenomena. The dominant feature of the reserve is the limestone massif Asenovo Kale, standing at 1,032 meters, while the highest peak in the area, Panica, rises to 1,443 meters, proudly showcasing this natural oasis. One of the most exciting attractions of this reserve is its caves and pits, the most famous of which is Vetrena Dupka Cave, with underground passages extending approximately 4,000 meters. Likewise, the Pešterica pit, plunging to a depth of 160 meters, presents a challenge for all speleology enthusiasts.

Cultural Heritage

Within the reserve lies the Monastery of St. John the Theologian, situated in the gorge near the village of Poganovo. This monastery, dating back to the 14th century, is an important cultural and historical monument from the era of the medieval Serbian state.






Ecological and International Significance

"Jerma" is part of the broader ecological network "EMERALD," which includes 61 areas of special importance for nature conservation. This international framework enables the preservation of specific plant and animal species within both the national and European ecological network NATURA 2000.

Protected areas like "Jerma," along with other ecological sites such as Deliblatska Peščara, Đerdap, Stara Planina, and Prokletije, play a crucial role in preserving Serbia's biodiversity and strengthening cross-border cooperation in nature conservation.
